Fas Mart Boosts UVa-Wise Athletics with $12,000 Donation
WISE, September 29, 2009 Convenience retailer Fas Mart announced today that it will donate $12,000 to the athletic department at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise (UVa-Wise), one of the top public liberal arts colleges according to U.S. News & World Report.
A Fas Mart representative will present the check to UVa-Wise at the Fas Mart UVa-Wise Golf Tournament held at the Virginian Golf Club in Bristol, Va. on October 5 at TIME.
“Athletics at UVa-Wise is supported totally by private sources,” says Athletic Director Danny Sterling. “These donations are critical to our success. We are very pleased a corporation such as Fas Mart takes an interest in our athletic department and in us as an institution.”
Fas Mart also donated to the school’s athletics last year, bringing their two-year total contributions to almost $40,000. The 2008 donation helped provide athletic scholarships to students for the 2008-2009 school year, during which UVa-Wise granted 34 students aid for athletic achievement in sports, including basketball, baseball, football, golf, softball, tennis and volleyball.
“The contribution from Fas Mart last year was instrumental in providing scholarships to our deserving student-athletes. Scholarships ease the financial burden of our students, allowing them to concentrate on achieving success in the classroom, on the field and on the courts,” says Kathy Still, assistant director of college relations.
Following Fas Mart’s 2008 donation, the UVa-Wise football team celebrated their 100th victory in a 42-12 win over Faulkner University and finished the season rated 19th nationally in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
Dave McComas, president and chief executive officer of GPM Investments, LLC, which operates both the Fas Mart and Shore Stop convenience store chains says, “We are honored to support these talented student-athletes at UVa-Wise and hope this year’s donation helps build on the school’s success.”
The UVa-Wise athletics donation is part of over $80,000 in contributions Fast Mart and Shore Stop have made to charities and other organizations this year. Fas Mart and its valued customers continue to support charities in their store communities through an in-store donation program. See local stores for details.
Fas Mart Aids Family Crisis Support Services with $14,000 Donation
Convenience retailer Fas Mart today donated $14,000 from its 10th Annual Golf Outing and Auction to Family Crisis Support Services (FCSS), a local charity that assists homeless families and individuals in the Norton, Virginia area.
Fas Mart’s Regional Operations Manager Steve Brundage presented the check to Family Crisis Support Services Executive Director Susan B. Mullins at Fas Mart Convenience Store on Woodland Drive in Wise, VA.
“At the time we need it most, Fas Mart helps us embrace the daunting task of not only providing emergency services to a growing number of homeless families, but also providing them with the skills necessary to make a permanent change in their situation,” says Susan B. Mullins.
Charlie, one FCSS client, illustrates the importance of the organization and its work for disadvantaged members of the Norton community. Charlie is an alcoholic who entered the FCSS emergency shelter, Guest House, penniless and homeless after he was devastated by the death of his son. He lived in Guest House, adhering to the shelter’s rules—which include no alcohol or controlled substances—and worked in their thrift store where he sometimes spent over 50 hours a week.
“By working at the thrift store, I became physically, psychologically and emotionally prepared to go back to work,” says Charlie.
In fact, a chance encounter with his former boss led to Charlie returning to his employer and earning a raise. Charlie has since moved into the Hope House, a transitional home run by FCSS.
“We are delighted to support Family Crisis Support Services to help people like Charlie rebuild their lives,” says Dave McComas, president and chief executive officer of GPM Investments, LLC, which operates both the Fas Mart and Shore Stop convenience store chains.
The FCSS donation is just part of the over $100,000 in contributions Fas Mart has made to charities this year. Fas Mart and its valued customers continue to support Family Crisis Support Services and other charities in their store communities through an in-store donation program. See local stores for details.
